Admissions Process

University of the People tailors its programs to qualified individuals from all over the world. The University’s programs are designed for self-motivated learners.  Therefore, admission to the University is based on a rigorous assessment of each applicant’s potential for successful completion of the program.

 

The admissions application process consists of two parts:

  • Part 1 takes place online and requires the applicant to fill out personal information and respond to essay questions. You can login and complete the UoPeople online application at your own pace.
  • Part 2 takes place offline, and consists of sending all of the required documents to our Office of Admissions by post.

 

Once UoPeople receives the complete application, it will be processed for the next available term.

Part 1 – The Online Application Process

 

In the online application process you will be required to enter the following information:

  • Personal information (name, address, etc)
  • Academic interest
  • Contact information
  • Educational History

In addition, you will be required to write six short essays (70-100 words each) about various topics.

 

You will also be asked to submit payment for an Application Processing Fee of $10-$50. The Application Processing Fee is determined by your place of residence. Please see the UoPeople enrollment agreement for more specific information click here

 

 

Part 2- the Offline Application Process

 

Part 2 takes place offline, in which you will be asked to send UoPeople the following documents by mail:

 

  • A signed cover sheet. The cover sheet can be downloaded from the Forms and Transcripts section of the online application.
  • A high school diploma and a high school transcript which must be submitted in their original language with an accompanying translation if the documents are not already in English. Your diploma and transcript may be original documents, official copies mailed directly to UoPeople from an official authority, or certified copies that bear original stamps and signatures from a notary public or the issuing institution. Translations must be notarized, and should be accurate and word-for-word. Translations must be drafted by your Ministry of Education or by a professional translator or translation company.
  • If the diploma and transcript with which you are applying are not from an institution where English was the primary language of instruction, you would have to provide a English Proficiency document to be considered for direct admission to your desired undergraduate program. If you are a non-native English speaker, or you graduated from an institution where English was not the primary language of instruction, please click here to view which English proficiency documents you may submit to be considered for admission to an undergraduate program.

Please note that English can only be considered your native language if it is an official language of your home country and the primary language spoken in your home.

  • Computer Science applicants are required to submit one or more of the following qualifications: example of a strong mathematics preparation in high school; prior college-level course work in mathematics and/or in computer science; work-related experience in either math or computer science.

 

Applicants who are unable to demonstrate English Proficiency or present the relevant Computer Science requirements will still be considered for admission: If admitted to UoPeople, you will have a "non-degree special student" status, which means that you will be required to successfully complete pre-requisite course(s) in English and/or Mathematics order to proceed to your desired undergraduate program. 

 

Students will have two attempts to take this course(s). If students are not able to successfully complete the course following two attempts, they will not be able to begin their studies in an undergraduate program at the university.

 

Please note that all submitted documents become the property of University of the People, and cannot be returned.

  

Making Our Decision 

Applications will be considered according to the day of receipt at our Office of Admissions and to the University of the People’s deadlines. Each application is thoroughly reviewed by our staff and supervised by the Admissions Committee.

 

The criteria for acceptance include the availability of a place in the program chosen by the applicant and the judgment of university staff as to the ability of the applicant to successfully complete the program. The university is not obligated to accept all applicants.

 

After being accepted to study at UoPeople, all applicants will receive information from Student Services regarding their first term courses.

Do's And Don'ts
  • DO begin your application online.
  • DO refer to the FAQ’s located inside the online application for instructions and admissions requirements.  If your question is not addressed in the FAQs, DO write to admissions@uopeople.org before sending your application.
  • DO pay attention to deadlines. Applications received after the deadlines will be processed for the next available Term.
  • DO ensure that your legal name is properly recorded in your online application and on all documentation. Your legal name must match with all documents submitted.
  • Do make sure all photocopies of academic credentials bare original stamps and signatures from a certified notary public or from an official of the institution that issued the document(s).
  • DO keep photocopies of your application and all forms you submitted for your records.     
  • DO make certain that your file is complete before sending.  If you are missing documents, your application will be delayed and your application may then only be eligible for processing in later Terms.
  • DO make sure to check the e-mail address registered to your online application for important messages frequently.           
  • DO proofread your Personal Statements.     

 

AND

  • DON’T send photocopies of academic credentials and/or translations that do not have notarizations.
  • DON’T use any portion of any other person’s work to complete your Personal Statements without giving credit to its author.
  • DON'T call. Please remember to contact us ONLY via e-mail. As a tuition-free University, we are comprised of limited staff members and volunteers.
