This place is awesome. Thank you for giving me this chance to continue my studies. This is how higher education should be. I come from a low income family and there are six kids and my older brother and sister went to college but they had to take out student loans."
Mikhail, Jamaica, UoPeople Business Administration Student

STUDENTS FROM INDONESIA, ZAMBIA AND BRAZIL WRITE ABOUT THE TUITION- FREE ONLINE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AT UNIVERSITY OF THE PEOPLE. May 10 ,2010
Praise for borderless online learning environments.
"Limitations on my funding and time placed local universities out of reach. University of the People's borderless way of learning certainly has opened new hope for me and other UoPeople students who are preparing for a better life. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the UoPeople learning method is great fun and very attractive. In my humble opinion, with UoPeople, there will be no difficulties as long as there is open and continuous communication among the students and the instructors.”

STUDENTS FROM INDONESIA AND BRAZIL WRITE ABOUT THE POPULARITY OF OUR TUITION- FREE UNIVERSITY. May 18 ,2010
This tuition- free university has given me hope.
“I put much hope in University of the People to democratize education in Indonesia and around the world. I have seen greedy business people every day in Indonesia who convert education into profit-oriented organizations. They have forced us, the young generation, into a state being with no choice other than to pay extremely high tuitions. Now, they have to realize that a global competitor has come through our computers at home. I thank University of the People for this reason. Thank you being part of our national education. You are welcome here!”
Marice, Indonesia, UoPeople Business Administration Student
Learning together at a tuition- free university initiates ideas and leads to mutual understanding.
"I chose University of the People because it represents a new philosophy of contemporary thought. It is an important chance to learn under a different model. Students are diverse but we have a goal in common: to build a better world with more social justice. We have the opportunity to contribute to the construction of the world we dream: a world of peace, harmony and respect for all."
Deivison, Brazil, UoPeople Business Administration Student

The University is well equipped with highly seasoned instructors who have what it takes to develop students of great honor. Students come from all walks of life--different cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds--which creates a beautiful platform for the exchange of ideas. I view this as a step towards achieving world peace."
Everistus, Nigeria, UoPeople Business Administration Student
Home learning courses bring opportunities to today’s students.
“Tuition- free education and home learning courses allow integration of people with different social backgrounds. The opportunity is there for people to embrace. This education enables me to compete in the labor market, because if I had not studied, perhaps I could not work.”
Priscilla, Brazil, UoPeople Business Administration Student

A MIRACLE FOR A STUDENT IN NIGERIA
"I never dreamed of reaching this point in my education, not to mention the possibility of attending an international tuition- free university.
I found University of the People and gave it a try and sent in my application. I wondered if I could be selected out of many in the world. Miraculously, I was chosen despite of all the worries. This is really satisfying."

SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW
"My name is Yosua from Jakarta, Indonesia. I’m twenty years old. Currently I’m enrolled in the Business Administration program at UoPeople.org (already in Term 5) and also working as a Contributor & Columnist for the leading English newspaper in Indonesia, The Jakarta Post.
I’ve been contributing to the paper since January 2009 and, in July 2009, I was given a special spot in the paper to write my own column called Yoz’s Say-so. Up until now, I’ve been writing to numerous publications both national and international (the U.S. and ASEAN region). I chose to study at University of the People because my parents could not afford for me to continue my studies. It all began in 2007 when we had a financial crash. Since then, it’s very hard for us to earn enough money to pay the home bills.
I’ve been offered a couple of partial scholarships by some international universities in Indonesia, but still couldn’t afford the tuition fees.
Then out of the blue, I found an article in the local paper (KOMPAS, Indonesia) for the first-ever, tuition free university. I immediately jumped on the opportunity and finally got accepted. Studying at University of the People has changed my life completely. It has given me another bright light for the future and a lot of useful knowledge. Though it still needs to be accredited, I have a lot faith that this University will eventually triumph and set a good path for others to follow."

UNIVERSITY OF THE PEOPLE: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A STUDENT IN BRAZIL
"My name is Priscilla, I'm Brazilian, married and I'm 29 years old. Currently, I'm studying in Term 4 at University of the People. Online study is ideal for my situation; because I work so hard and have two children, it would be impossible for me to attend regular college classes.
I feel very privileged to be part of this institution. In my country, university courses are not a financial reality for many young people. I saw this opportunity at UoPeople.org as my great chance to attend university and receive a tuition free education. Since I started studying, I’ve evolved as a human being, learning from the opinions of others and I have overcome my difficulties. I intend to continue to hone my skills."

A DREAM OF TUITION- FREE ONLINE EDUCATION IS NOW A REALITY
"My name is George. I was born in 1963 and raised in Aleppo, Syria. I have got my elementary education in a private school which taught Arabic and French. After my high school graduation, I attended engineering courses at the University of Aleppo. At this time I had to work to support myself and my younger sister after both of my parents passed away, so I had to quit my college studies and dedicate my time to working.
My first job was in the early 80’s at my uncle’s firm, dealing in transport and customs clearance business. I worked there for almost a decade. Afterwards I started my own business in the same domain, which was profitable for me. I also joined a company in late 90’s working in cosmetics as a branch manager. In 2002, I was offered to work in Saudi Arabia in the post of Sales Manager. A few years after, I joined another company as Purchasing and Administration Manager.
While my career was improving, the dream of completing a degree was always following me. Unfortunately, my working schedule was too busy, and the only opportunity was “Online learning”!"

A MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE TO THE UOPEOPLE FOUNDER
"My name is Tran. I was born in a peace village in Hai Duong, Viet Nam in 1982. I am married and have one daughter. I graduated from university with a major in the environment, but I wanted to join a garment factory and work on the business side.
I wanted to attend one course at a university about business management. But time is tight for me to work and go to school. Online study is the best choice for me. Vietnam also has many online business management courses, which are taught in Vietnamese, but I wanted to learn in English so that I can improve my English too. I searched on the Internet for many courses and found UoPeople.org
When I visited the UoPeople website and read the introduction, I knew this tuition free University was what I was looking for. To the people who created this great University, thanks a lot."

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN
"I started searching for a study program on the Internet. I explored more than a dozen programs from different countries. Each school required astronomical fees, reaching the level of $60,000, which I couldn’t afford.
Last year (2009), I read some information about tuition free universities, and after a quick search, I found University of People. Knowing that UNESCO supported the program, I applied immediately.
It was too good to be true. A few months later I was accepted for the preliminary course, and here I am, completing my fourth term and preparing for the fifth. The program is tremendous. The tuition free sources and methods of learning are a very exciting experience for me; peer-to-peer leaning was new to me. I faced some frustrating moments in the beginning, but nine months later I sufficiently comprehend the system. I wish that this opportunity was available twenty years ago, but as we say, it is never too late to learn. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity since it is here."

UNIVERSITY OF THE PEOPLE: AN EDUCATIONALLY REWARDING EXPERIENCE
"My name is Bruck. I am from Ethiopia and I enrolled in UoPeople while I was working in Italy. I do not exactly remember how I came across UoPeople.org, but I think it was through Twitter.
I began to spread the word to friends and people who might be interested. During this time I applied myself as well. I always had a desire to study Business Administration to complement my technical background.
The fact that UoPeople offers tuition free online education was a good attraction point and it seemed to be a productive way of making use of my time.
At the beginning, adjusting to the whole virtual learning environment and falling into the routine of reminding and disciplining myself was the most difficult part for me. It was easy to miss deadlines and also miss participating and rating discussions in the forum. But after a short transition period, it was easy to get back on track.
The interaction between instructors and students was instrumental in obtaining a breadth of knowledge in the subject matter. It also provides an interface for building a sense of community and serves as a substitute for the lack of physical interaction that would have been present in traditional classroom based education.
The peer assessment of the discussion forum and assignments provides one with a reasonable grade by awarding an average value out of all the ratings from other students.
All in all, my experience with UoPeople has been great, professionally uplifting and educationally rewarding. I recommend UoPeople to anyone interested in pursuing their studies."

ONLINE COURSES AT UOPEOPLE HAVE ALLOWED ME TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY AND WORK FULL TIME
"I have said it before and I will say it again: I wish this opportunity would have come a little earlier. For the past ten years I had been trying to enroll in some online courses. I had previously been enrolled in Bemidji University, but the fees were just unaffordable for me. Before that I was enrolled in a Master of Petroleum Management which was being offered by Dubai Polytechnic University. They needed twenty students from UAE and I was one of them. But again I could not afford the fee. Before that I was enrolled in M.Sc Physic at Islamia University, Bahawalpur, but due to family circumstances, I needed to leave to find a job. I was also enrolled in M.Sc Mathematics, but again couldn’t afford it. Clearly, I have always had a strong desire for higher education but I couldn’t complete it due to financial and family circumstances. Now at last, home learning courses at University of the People have provided me this wonderful opportunity. I never thought online courses would be offered in such an amazing way. I have taken full advantage of this opportunity, while providing for my family and working full time."

IT IS TIME TO GIVE IT BACK TO THE PEOPLE
"I am Marice from Indonesia. I am a Bataknese (an ethnic group originally from North Sumatera). Culturally, Bataknese put education in the highest priority in the family life. For almost thirty years, I have seen so many Bataknese parents go into debt just to send their children to school. Such a financial burden is one thing that makes me happy and sad simultaneously. I am happy for their will to learn and sad for the heavy burden.
Indonesia, in my view, is a nation hungry for education. In the last fifteen years, I have seen so many business people get involved in the “education business”. The “international standard” schools have grown just like a mushroom in the rainy season. It grows rapidly. Due to globalization, more people demand an international standard education. Business people see the opportunity and start to make education as the center of their business. In the end, education gets more expensive. People are willing to pay higher prices for the higher quality. Middle class people are happy for this opportunity, since they cannot send their children to study abroad, but still are able to enjoy the international standard of schooling provided in the country. The rich people have no problem since they are able to send their children abroad. The poor people are the ones who have the broken hearts, since they feel that all the doors are closed now, as public schools are not reliable in this country.
When I see the power of the Internet, I see the opportunity to get back to an abundant life. We are all born with the same opportunity to acquire wealth through knowledge, but for many years, the conventional education system has made the doors only open for the few and closed to others for financial reasons. It is time to give it back to the people. Knowledge is not a scarce resource. It is available for free on the Internet.
The first time I read about University of the People, I could not stop myself from looking at UoPeople.org and reading more about the university. After reading all of the information on the website, I felt that the Founder Shai Reshef shares the same vision as me. I see the future. I see the “medicine” for that financial burden. The Internet indeed provides whatever knowledge is needed for everyone, but not everyone knows how to use it and moreover, some of them have restricted access. University of the People has done a job like a “bird” that brings the foods to the “nest” for whoever is eager to learn. University of the People has taken everything out there available on the Internet and bundled it together for you. And the more interesting thing is that UoPeople also asks for your participation to do the same, to become a “bird” that goes out digging on the Internet to bring information to the campus and share it with your classmates. The power of sharing like this is the power which brings us to an abundant life. Now, people who learn from the Internet are having a chance to get their knowledge recognized by an authorized educational institution. I could not handle the excitement to spread this information to my friends that now we are in the era of abundant life. The door to higher education is unlocked. The access is open now!
I joined University of the People in the second term. So far, I have learnt many things, not only knowledge, but also lessons for self-improvement. I have failed, made mistakes many times and I am also learning from my mistakes. The freedom to learn at your own pace actually drives you to take more responsibility. When you have nothing to blame, nothing to excuse, you have to correct and improve yourself. I have failed many times due to my nasty procrastination habit. The University gives students a week to learn one unit of each course, but I often rush myself in the last minute. Learning from this mistake, I have seen that studying at University of the People is also a place to challenge myself to have self-discipline and responsibility.
Somehow, studying at University of the People shifts my mind to “the rich mindset.” Here, in University of the People, I see the power of sharing. The peer-to-peer learning system nurtures the rich attitude in me. Learning at University of the People is fun. We –students of University of the People – are very rich here and have so many things to shares in our Discussion Forums, Assignments and Assessments. Having classmates from various countries and backgrounds is the most exciting part of learning here. Seeing wide, diverse points of view sometimes shocks me, but it always enlightens my horizon. Getting wide diverse points of view from my classmates is the precious learning experience that I don’t get from learning in a traditional classroom environment.
I myself have experienced the benefit of the availability of higher education provided by University of the People. My younger sister who graduated from a vocational college wants to improve her career life by taking a bachelor’s degree. I suggested for her toenroll at University of the People. She is interested in joining University of the People. She was having many doubts that she will not be able to compete studying on a global level with students from other countries and she worries about many things related to studying online. But I already have the first-hand experience of studying online and will be able to guide her to successfully study at University of the People. As her sister, I am happy to see her get a chance to study at a higher, international standard educational institution without having to face heavy financial burdens. I have experienced the benefit of the availability of higher education like University of the People, and I love to share this experience to encourage people to get the same benefit. We all have the same chance to get education. Knowledge is not scarce. It is available for free on the Internet. No one will have a broken heart for having no chance to study. University of the People gives you access to higher education. It is unlocked now!"
